Does Whoop Track Steps? What It Does (and Doesn’t) Measure
Whoop is a recovery platform, not a fitness tracker. Here’s what it actually tracks—and what it deliberately ignores.
For wearable options, see: Best Smart Rings for Sleep Tracking.
The Short Answer
No, Whoop does not track steps. This is intentional.
Why Whoop Skips Steps
Whoop’s philosophy: Steps are a vanity metric. What matters is cardiovascular strain and recovery.
- 10,000 steps of slow walking? Minimal strain.
- 30 minutes of HIIT? High strain.
Whoop prioritizes how hard your body works, not just movement volume.
What Whoop Actually Tracks
| Tracks | Doesn’t Track |
|---|---|
| Heart rate (continuous) | Steps |
| HRV | Floors climbed |
| Strain score | Distance walked |
| Sleep stages | Calories burned (for weight loss) |
| Recovery score | GPS |
| Respiratory rate | Music controls |
| SpO2 | Notifications |
The Strain Score System
Instead of steps, Whoop uses Strain (0-21 scale):
- 0-9: Light day (walking, easy work)
- 10-13: Moderate (light workout)
- 14-17: High (hard training)
- 18-21: Extreme (competition, maximal effort)
Strain accumulates throughout the day based on heart rate elevation and duration.
Is This a Problem?
For Athletes: No
If you’re training for performance, strain and recovery matter more than steps.
For General Health: Maybe
If you want to hit 10K steps daily for basic movement, Whoop won’t help you track that goal.
Workarounds
If you want steps AND Whoop-style recovery:
- Use iPhone/Android steps: Phone tracks steps automatically
- Add Apple Watch: Wear Watch on one wrist, Whoop on other/bicep
- Choose Oura instead: Tracks both steps and HRV/recovery
Whoop vs Trackers That DO Track Steps
| Device | Steps | HRV/Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Whoop | ❌ | ✅ Excellent |
| Oura Ring | ✅ | ✅ Excellent |
| Apple Watch | ✅ | ✅ Good |
| Garmin | ✅ | ✅ Good |
| Fitbit | ✅ | Fair |
Verdict
Whoop deliberately doesn’t track steps because its focus is on cardiovascular strain and
recovery—metrics more meaningful for athletes.
If steps matter to you, use your phone or choose a different wearable. Oura tracks both steps and recovery with
Whoop-level depth.
